Seed Co’s 85-Year Legacy Shines at Rattray Arnold Research Station Annual Field Day

By Rawlings Kofi

HARARE, Zimbabwe – In a vibrant display of agricultural innovation and resilience, Seed Co Limited hosted its Annual Field Day at the prestigious Rattray Arnold Research Station (RARS) on March 11, 2026. The event, held under the theme of "Science-Led Agriculture," brought together government officials, regional delegates, and hundreds of farmers to witness the cutting edge of seed technology designed to secure Zimbabwe’s food future.

The Field Day served as both a celebration of Seed Co’s 85-year heritage and a strategic roadmap for the nation’s agricultural transformation. As the sun beat down on lush fields of maize, sorghum, and sunflowers, the message from the podium was clear: innovation is the only insurance against a changing climate.

A Vision of Food Sovereignty

The Guest of Honour, Professor Dr. Obert Jiri, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, hailed the event as a vital cornerstone of the national agricultural calendar. In his keynote address, Dr. Jiri emphasized that the work being done at RARS is perfectly aligned with President E.D. Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030.

"This Field Day is not just a seasonal event; it is a celebration of the science of agriculture and a testament to the power of public-private partnerships," Dr. Jiri stated. He noted that Seed Co’s research directly supports the four pillars of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2): food security, nutrition security, improved livelihoods, and agriculture-led economic growth.

Dr. Jiri also used the platform to announce the government’s aggressive "Accelerated Irrigation Capacitation" program, aimed at de-risking the sector from the "tyranny of rain-fed agriculture."

Innovation in the Soil: The Launch of SC 449

A major highlight of the day was the official launch of SC 449, a new climate-smart maize variety in the very early maturity series. This variety is specifically engineered to provide high yields while maturing quickly enough to escape mid-season dry spells—a critical feature for farmers facing increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

Seed Co Limited Managing Director, Mrs. Felistus Gurajena, reflected on the company’s pioneering history, which includes the development of SR52, the world’s first single-cross hybrid maize. "Today, we are not just showcasing our latest varieties; we are reaffirming our unwavering commitment to National Food Security," she said.

Gurajena detailed a product basket that now extends far beyond maize, including:

  • Red Hybrid Sorghum (SC XH102): A "blockbuster" for drier regions.

  • White Wheat (SC W9104): Developed to meet millers' preferences for white flour color and high yield.

  • Bio-fortified Sugar Beans (NUA674): Addressing national nutrition security.

  • Hybrid Sunflowers: Featuring head-dropping characteristics to reduce bird damage and maximize oil seed yields.

Empowering the "Backbone of the Economy"

The event was characterized by a spirit of "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo" (A nation is built by its own people). Farmers from across Zimbabwe and the African continent toured the demonstration plots, engaging directly with scientists and agronomists.

Visuals from the day captured the high-level engagement, with Dr. Jiri and Mrs. Gurajena seen cutting the ceremonial ribbon amidst towering maize crops. Other scenes showed the officials inspecting the massive heads of the new sunflower varieties and walking through the "Seed Co" branded inflatable arches that welcomed the hundreds of attendees.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Jiri issued a "parting shot" to the industry, urging Seed Co to adopt modern technologies like barcodes and DNA "fingerprints" to combat the surge of counterfeit seeds that defraud farmers.

As the day concluded, the sentiment among attendees was one of renewed hope. With 226 varieties released across 15 African countries, Seed Co’s journey from a single Zimbabwean market to a pan-African giant continues to be driven by a singular goal: empowering the African farmer to achieve a bumper harvest, no matter the season.
